The Masai Mara National Reserve in southwestern Kenya, is an extension of the Serengeti National Park of Tanzania. Named for the Maasai tribespeople (the traditional inhabitants of the area) and the Mara River which divides it, it is famous for its exceptional population of game and the annual migration of the wildebeest. The entire area of the park is nestled within the enormous Great Rift Valley that extends from the Mediterranean Sea to South Africa. The reserve offers wonderful scenery of breathtaking vistas, panoramas of vast rolling plains, hills and woodland groves, well watered by the lovely Mara River. The Mara is home to the largest population of lions in Kenya; these magnificent beasts spend most of the day sleeping in the shade of Acacia Trees. The waters of the Mara River are home to crocodiles and pools of hippo and the woodlands and forests are favored by leopard and elephant while the open savannah areas play host to the plains' game. All of the "Big Five" - Lion, Rhino, Buffalo, Elephant and Leopard - are here, as well as cheetah, hippo, hartebeest, gazelle, topi, antelope, zebra and many other animals.

North and South Camps have 12 suites each, and Intimate Tree Camp has six suites, each with spectacular Crater views. The Ngorongoro Crater is a world heritage site that is close to three million years old and the area is a haven for a variety of wildlife. The Crater is situated on the Eastern edge of the Serengeti National Park in East Africa. Relax near the once active volcano that offers its visitors a large soda lake, fresh springs and sheltering forests. Geologically, Ngorongoro is the remnant of a volcano that blew apart, leaving a flat plain area ringed with steep walls. The Ngorongoro volcano, before it exploded and collapsed 2 million years ago, was one of the world's tallest mountains. There is a large concentration of animals in the Crater and sightings of the "Big Five": lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and buffalo, are almost guaranteed. The structure of the Crater and the wildlife it attracts makes for a great African wildlife experience.

Day 8
Your stay at Tarangire Tree Tops includes scheduled game-drives and a guided walk. Wide panoramas of open acacia woodland and grassy savanna studded with large Baobab trees mark Tarangire - the best-kept secret on the 'northern safari circuit'. Tarangire National Park covers 2,600 square kms and has the greatest concentration of wildlife outside the Serengeti ecosystem - a smorgasbord for predators. It is known for its tree-climbing lions and for its very big herds of buffalo. This is one of Africa's little-known gems and should be on the itinerary of all lovers of wilderness and solitude. Predators include lion, cheetah and leopard, and birders will want to look out for the endemic ashy starling, rufous-tailed weaver and black-collared lovebird. Resident lion, giraffe, elephant, and black rhino are common at any season and the park is noted for its baobab trees and splendid vistas of rolling savannah and acacia woodland. Tarangire National Park's pythons climb trees, as do its lions and leopards, lounging in the branches where the fruit of the sausage tree disguises the twitch of a tail.
The camp also offers the unique facility of night drives and game walks, including a special trail for mountain biking. Armed rangers, whose knowledge of the bush is legendary, accompany all ventures. Home to a unique ecosystem, the area has all the same species of wildlife as the Tarangire National Park, including buffalo, lion, cheetah, leopard and elephant. Huge herds of elephant frequent the site of the camp on their way to watering in the Sand River, ensuring year-round resident game. The establishment of this camp has also resulted in many developments for the village, including improved water facilities and a school, as a percentage of all visitors' lodging costs are donated to several village improvement schemes.

The river-fronted camp offers exceptional crocodile and hippo viewing. Grumeti's 10 spacious tents under makuti (palm frond) canopies and the vibrancy of colourful interiors - including hand-blown Kenyan glassware, African cloth and local sculptured furnishings - bring alive the excitement of Africa. Each tented suite features a large bed made of Tanzanian cypress and comfortable deck furniture both in and outdoors. The en-suite bathrooms have separate washrooms and alfresco showers open to the sun and stars. The spacious decks are perfect for sundowners overlooking the water. Day 10
Activities include game-drives in the Serengeti National Park. Day trips to Lake Victoria (Rubondo Island) are available at an additional cost and may be booked directly at the lodge.
Every year during Africa's annual Great Migration, hundreds of thousands of wildebeest, zebra and other herbivores cross the Grumeti River, risking the jaws of some of the largest crocodiles on earth. Large pods of hippo grunt from their watery hideaway below the camp and black-and-white Colobus monkeys live in Grumeti's bird-filled riverine trees. At night, the nocturnal orchestra of owls and bush babies is punctuated by the primeval sounds of lion and hyena.
Serengeti comes from the Masai word 'Siringit' meaning 'the place where the land runs on forever' and refers to the flat grassy plains which make up about a third of the park. The grasslands and savannahs of the Serengeti National Park sustain a huge animal population and is world famous for the Great Wildebeest Migration, the mass movement of millions of ungulates (hoofed animals) allured first to the north, and then back to the south by the promise of rains. This annual movement of herbivores across the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem is one of the greatest spectacles in the natural world. Tirelessly following almost the same pattern each year, and at around the same time of the calendar, the animals take an amazing yearlong 2,900 km clockwise trek, relentlessly tracked by Africa's great predators. Known as the "greatest spectacle in the natural world", the horizon fills with 1.5 million wildebeest, 200,000 zebra, 18,000 eland and 500,000 gazelle in this primal trek - each one driven by the same ancient rhythm, fulfilling its instinctive role in the inescapable cycle of life. Some fall prey to the giant crocodiles as they plunge through the Mara and Grumeti rivers, while predators stalk others on the run. Golden-manned lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena, elephant, jackals, wild dogs, topi and impala are just a few of the hundreds of different species that live in the massive park.
ALTERNATIVELY
Spend two nights at Klein's Camp. Accommodation is in a thatched cottage with en-suite hand basins, shower and washroom. Your stay is on a full board basis including scheduled activities and concession fees.
Activities include game-drives and nature walks in the Klein's Camp private concession. The afternoon game-drives extend after sunset with the aid of a spotlight, returning to the camp after dark. Klein's Camp community visits are available at an additional cost and may be booked directly at the lodge, subject to availability of vehicles.
Klein's Camp is situated deep in the heart of the game-rich northern Serengeti right off the beaten tourist track. Its 10,000-hectare/24,800-acre private wildlife concession leased from Maasai landlords is allotted for the exclusive use of the camps 20 guests, offering you the ultimate personal Tanzanian safari. With Kenyas Masai Mara National Park to the north and the Serengeti to the west, Klein's is one of the most strategically positioned wildlife sanctuaries in the world - right in the path of migrating wildebeest and zebra. The camp is set on the edge of the Kuka Hills, commanding breathtaking views of the valley through which hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and zebra migrate, in addition to excellent year-round game viewing. Action-packed night game-drives and extensive bush walks into the Serengeti are an absolute highlight.
With sweeping views into the Grumeti River Valley, the camp's eight tasteful cottages are built of local rock and thatch, their interior augmented by traditional African design. Klein's Camp comprises a main lodge and ten luxury turn-of-the-century style cottages of local rock and thatch have rich wooden floors which beautifully offset the soft cream and gossamer-fabric interiors. Each spacious cottage has an en-suite bathroom with showerheads the size of a dinner platter, giving you the sensory equivalent of an indoor cloud-burst. From each private terrace, a diversity of resident wildlife, including elephant, may be viewed in the valley. Askaris (Masai warrior guards) accompany you to and from your cottage at night.
The camp has a large, beautifully furnished bar/living area, plunge pool, curio shop and leisure deck. The curio shop stocks locally made Maasai crafts. The restaurant and lounge command spectacular views of the valley and surrounding hills. Savor wholesome Pan-African meals accompanied by flavorsome vegetables and freshly picked herbs from our Shamba, an organic African garden. Each meal is a culinary celebration. Dinners are served in the main dining area, which is graced by a large open fireplace, or in an enchanting bush clearing.
